The most effective way to keep your guinea pigs free from internal and external parasites is to apply Revolution every three months. Use either Revolution for Cats (30 drops to a vial) or Revolution for Puppies and Kittens (10 drops to a vial). The concentration of Selamectin in both is 60mg/cc. If you have more than two guinea pigs the larger vial is best.The dosage is 6-12mg per kilo every three months (each tube contains 15mg active ingredient ie Selamectin so for a 1kg piggy you would use eight drops). To prevent pooling and run off, apply to two or three different spots on the back of the neck. Don't bath your piggy for twenty four hours after applying Revolution. If you don't use the whole tube, recap tightly and store upright in a cool dark place.
DRINKING WATER:
Guinea pigs need a constant supply of fresh drinking water. The best way to supply water is with a specially designed water bottle. There are many varieties available in petshops and produce stores. I have found some types to be more efficient than others and less likely to leak. Some plastic bottles come with a hook on the base which is meant for attaching to the top of the cage. I don't find these very effective as the bottle swings around making it very difficult for the guinea pig's mouth to connect with the nozzle. The preferred method is to attach the bottle to the side of the cage by way of a wire loop or a stainless steel spring with hooks. Bottles are preferable to bowls as it doesn't take long for your piggies to soil the water in a bowl.
HANDY HINT: An easy way to clean your piggies water bottle is to first wash in warm soapy water using a toothbrush to scrub as much of the inside as possible, and the inside of the cap, rinse then soak both cap and bottle for several hours in a Milton solution (50ml per 4 litres of water). This will remove all mould and scum from all the surfaces including the inside of the drinking nozzle.
